OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Jun 1, 2026 – JDMBUYSELL, the world’s first and largest JDM cars marketplace in the USA and online since 2009, today launched the JDM Demand Index, a monthly ranking of buyer interest across its marketplace. The data shows demand broadening beyond six-figure icons toward affordable, practical Japanese imports — the kei vans, wagons, and entry sports cars that rarely reach a marquee auction.
“Auction results tell you what the headline cars sold for. Our inquiry data shows what buyers are asking about across the whole market — including the kei vans and everyday imports that never reach a marquee auction. The Subaru Sambar is up 140% in 30 days. You won’t find that in a bidder count,” said Colin Greig, founder of JDMBUYSELL.
The JDM Demand Index ranks chassis by buyer intent — a normalized score in which the most-inquired vehicle in each 30-day window is set to 100. The current top of the leaderboard:
- Nissan Skyline R34 — intent score 100 (up 6%)
- Mazda RX-7 FD3S — 78 (up 250%, the month’s biggest mover)
- Subaru Sambar kei van — 67 (up 140%)
- Nissan Silvia S15 — 39 (up 40%)
- Toyota Supra A80 — 22
The JDM Demand Index draws on a different signal than auction results. Bidder and bid counts measure demand at the moment of sale, concentrated on the premium cars consigned to auction. The JDM Demand Index measures buyer inquiries earlier in the buying process and across the full marketplace — including the affordable JDM vehicles that rarely reach a high-profile auction. Both are demand signals; they capture different cars at different stages.
Across the current leaderboard, the fastest-rising chassis are not the six-figure trophy cars but affordable, practical imports — the Subaru Sambar (up 140%) and Nissan Stagea (up 100%) — even as the broader U.S. collector-car market sits near a roughly 15-year low. That split does not appear in value-based collector indices.
The shift has a structural driver. The U.S. 25-year rule makes a rolling cohort of Japanese cars importable each year, and several sought-after 2001 models — including the Nissan Skyline R34, late Nissan Silvia S15, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution — cross that threshold during 2026, enlarging the U.S. buyer pool for those chassis.
