VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – October 19, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –
DeForest Tree Service has issued a public advisory urging Hampton Roads homeowners not to postpone tree maintenance despite the Atlantic recording its quietest hurricane season since 1966. The 2026 season has produced zero hurricanes through October 5, yet the company reports that routine storms continue to cause substantial damage across the region.
The advisory follows a detailed analysis published by the company, which notes that the Atlantic has gone 330 days without a hurricane. Even so, ordinary thunderstorms knocked out power to roughly 140,000 local customers during August, bringing down trees and limbs throughout Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. The company published its findings in an article titled DeForest Tree Service warns about the risks of a quiet hurricane season.
The company points out that the hurricane season runs through November 30 and that Gulf of Mexico water temperatures remain the warmest on record dating back to 1982. These conditions, according to the company, mean that a calm stretch of weather should not be mistaken for the end of seasonal risk.
A significant portion of the advisory addresses the financial consequences homeowners may face. The company explains that most homeowners policies cover a fallen tree only when it damages a covered structure. Virginia is also one of 19 states that apply hurricane-style percentage deductibles, which the company says can turn a single tree strike into an $8,000 out-of-pocket expense for property owners.
“A quiet season creates a false sense of security,” said Brandon DeForest, a representative of DeForest Tree Service. “Trees that are already weakened or leaning do not wait for a named storm to fall. A single thunderstorm can bring down a limb that has been compromised for years, and homeowners are often surprised by how little their insurance actually covers.”
The company encourages residents to inspect their properties for leaning trees, dead limbs, and branches positioned near structures or power lines. It also advises homeowners to review the declarations page of their insurance policy to understand deductible terms before severe weather arrives.
DeForest noted that proactive assessment remains the most practical response to current conditions. “Reviewing a property before a storm is far less costly than dealing with the aftermath,” he said. “Our team provides assessments and quotes across the region so that homeowners can make informed decisions while the weather is calm.”
The company offers emergency tree removal on a 24-hour basis, along with storm clean-up services for fallen trees, branches, and debris. These services are designed to mitigate further damage and restore safety following severe weather events.
